Two investment technology gurus have found themselves inside the virtual world of investing.
John C. Philson and Robert B. Olson have been designated as GlobeFlex Capital LP's first "virtual investment team." They will form a team of independent thinkers to help advance the firm's global equity research capabilities, said Marina L. Marrelli, chief executive officer and co-founder of the San Diego-based firm. They are looking for better research and investment strategies.
Because Mr. Philson is based in Maine and Mr. Olson in North Carolina, both will confer weekly by phone and meet quarterly on site in San Diego with the GlobeFlex investment team.
In addition to 20 years each of investment experience, both men have worked with GlobeFlex's founders in creating investment disciplines.
Mr. Philson, now president of Philson Associates in Kennebunk, Maine, worked with GlobeFlex's original research system in 1994. He has worked on developing, implementing and enhancing complex investment systems and first worked with GlobeFlex's co-founder and chief investment officer Bob Anslow at Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management, San Diego, Calif., developing the software for an international research system.
Mr. Olson worked with Mr. Anslow and Ms. Marrelli in the mid-1980s as a midcap portfolio manager at Nicholas-Applegate. Mr. Olson constructed Nicholas-Applegate's first quantitative stock selection model for his own use. He now heads Lodestar Capital Research in Cary, N.C., which offers specialized stock research and advanced equity valuation methods to institutional investment managers.
"As we find specialists in a particular area, we would like to add experts," Ms. Marrelli said.
