University of Western Ontario, London, hired Newcastle Capital as a U.S. small-cap equity manager and SSgA as a global bond manager for its C$800 million (U.S.$551 million) defined contribution plan, said Louise Koza, manager of pension investments and plan policy. Newcastle will manage C$28 million in small-caps as part of its existing C$200 million U.S. equity portfolio. SSgA will manage C$32 million in global bonds, which will come from existing Canadian bond managers. The decision to hire SSgA and shift part of the Newcastle portfolio was based on a risk analysis of the plan. Officials also decided to change custodians, following an extensive review, Ms. Koza said. Northern Trust was hired to replace CIBC Mellon Global Securities.
