Some portfolio managers raise assets merely by buzzing around on two wheels.
Maura Shaughnessy of MFS recently completed a 194-mile ride across Massachusetts to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston. She raised $20,000 in personal pledges while her firm, MFS Investment Management Inc., Boston, contributed more than $400,000 to the cycling event, the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge. MFS was a title sponsor of the event, which attracted 2,500 riders nationwide.
Ms. Shaughnessy said the rigors of the two-day ride were easy compared with battles faced by people with cancer. She manages the $2.6 billion MFS Capital Opportunities Fund and the $1.2 billion MFS Utilities Fund.
MFS portfolio managers riding alongside Ms. Shaughnessy included Peter Vaream, who runs the MFS Institutional Core Fixed Income Fund, and Bernie Scozzafava, a portfolio manager in the High Yield Series.
