The data contained in this special issue were developed by Pensions & Investments' staff from answers to detailed questionnaires sent to more than 1,200 banks, trust companies, insurance companies and independent investment management firms in the United States and abroad.
International and global managers are included in this issue, but also will be profiled in a separate, detailed directory to be published July 12. A more detailed look at managers of defined contribution assets will be published July 26.
All quantifiable answers to the questionnaires were entered into a spreadsheet program from which the charts, tables and other statistics were drawn. All information, except where noted, is as of Dec. 31.
As in previous years, managers were asked to provide the investment mix of the U.S. tax-exempt institutional assets under internal management; the amount invested on behalf of defined contribution plans; dollar amounts invested in various asset classes; names of the chief investment officer and client contact; and the parent company.
This year, for the first time, managers also were asked to break out their equity and fixed-income investments by style, giving specific dollar amounts invested in, for example, small-cap value stocks.
