Charles Schwab Investment Management introduced another in its series of proprietary indexed mutual funds, the Schwab Total Stock Market Index Fund. The portfolio managers of the Total Stock Market fund will use a sampling strategy to invest in a representative sample of stocks in the Wilshire 5000 index, rather than owning them all, said Geri Hom, co-portfolio manager of the Schwab Total Stock Market Index Fund. Because the index is capitalization-weighted, with its 2,500 largest stocks representing about 98% of its value, owning all stocks in the index would provide little, if any, additional performance boost, added co-portfolio manager Larry Mano. The funds annual operating expenses are 0.4% for investor shares (minimum initial investment, $1,000) and 0.27% for select shares (minimum initial investment, $50,000).
