Sens. Bob Graham, D-Fla., and Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, March 25 planned to introduce The Pension Coverage and Portability Act, comprehensive pension legislation complementing similar legislation recently introduced in the House. The bill, which builds on their legislation introduced last year on which no action was taken would allow workers to take their retirement savings from job to job; let them save more for their retirement; and make it easier for employers, especially small businesses, to offer pension plans. The senators, joined by Sens. Jim Jeffords, R-Vt., Kit Bond, R-Mo., Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Chuck Robb, D-Va., as co-sponsors, said they expected to have as many as 20 co-sponsors by the time they introduced the legislation. "We have scared off employers from offering pensions through complicated regulations, Mr. Graham said, noting that the legislation was intended to make it easier for employers to return to offering pension plans.
