President Clintons proposal to prop up the ailing Social Security system has support from most Americans, who see it as just part of the solution, according to a poll released today by Americans Discuss Social Security. While 35% of the 1,000 people surveyed favor using the budget surplus for fixing Social Security, 53% oppose the idea of the government investing some of the systems assets in the stock market. At the same time, more than half of those surveyed support creating individual accounts that would let working Americans direct their own Social Security investments.
