California Public Employees Retirement System, Sacramento, earned an unaudited 18.5% total return on its portfolio for the year ended Dec. 31, ranking it in the 96th percentile of all public funds over $1 billion in the Trust Universe Comparison Service. For the TUCS universe of public funds with $1 billion or greater in assets, the median return for the year was 15.3%. For the same period, the performance at the 25% percentile was 16.7%. Officials at the $151 billion fund credited the performance with strong gains in U.S. equities, 25% for the year; international equities, 15%; fixed-income investments, 11%; and real estate, 14%.
