WHEN: Began career in 1983 at Sketchley Services Inc. as an assistant to the senior vice president-finance. Also worked at Philadelphia National Bank as a financial analyst, and at SEI Corp. as a senior analyst in pension consulting. Joined Vassar in 1994; oversees its $550 million endowment, $12 million defined benefit fund and $30 million in planned giving assets.
WHY: Making a name for Vassar -- and himself -- in alternative investing.
Oversaw the tripling of Vassar's alternative investment program, which included making first-ever hedge fund investments for the endowment.
But investments don't dominate his work either. "He's a 360-degree thinker," said Douglas W. Phillips, associate treasurer for Williams College. Mr. Yoder looks at how all aspects of endowment management fit together, he said.
