The U.S. stock market fell more than 3% today, in a volatile session. The Dow Jones industrial average fell about 299.43 points to 8487.31, while the S&P 500 Index fell 40.29 points to 1072.15, both according to preliminary closing numbers.
``The market started weak and just got weaker'' as the day went on, said Franklin Morton, director of research for Ariel Capital.
He said there wasn't any single news that seemed to be the catalyst.
