NEW YORK -- Money management firm Neuberger & Berman LLC is using new browser-based portfolio accounting and management software.

The software, SunGard-Shaw Data's On-Line, uses World Wide Web technology.

A standard browser can be used to access SunGard-Shaw Data's private network, said Chris Remetz, an assistant vice president at SunGard-Shaw Data.

On-Line's new user interface operates in a manner similar to browsing the Internet. It incorporates navigational aids like home pages and user-defined favorite pages.

Information inside the network also can be navigated using hyperlinks. Users can hop from page to page or move from one information source to another by using a computer mouse to click on linked sources.

The simplicity in using the new version will mean portfolio managers will want it on their desktops, said Mr. Remetz.

"We're really excited about the new system," said Fred Tanaglia, manager of software development for institutional products at Neuberger & Berman. "This will bring us to the cutting edge of technology, giving us unlimited capabilities to merge in-house development and vendor products."

    Knight, Bain gains PORTIA, TradeView

TORONTO -- Knight, Bain, Seath & Holbrook Capital Management Inc. has licensed the global portfolio accounting and management software PORTIA.

The money manager also licensed the order management and trade execution system TradeView, both products from Thomson Investment Software, Boston.

In a statement, Knight Bain Chief Operating Officer Paul Batho said his firm chose PORTIA because "it met all items on our functionality wish list, and with the system's scalable technical environment and inherent flexibility, PORTIA promised to continue to meet our needs in the future."

TradeView links traders, portfolio managers and operations personnel. The software eliminates the need for paper trade tickets.

    SS&C programs replace SunAmerica's mainframe

LOS ANGELES -- SunAmerica Inc. has selected a number of SS&C Technologies Inc. software products to replace its computer mainframe-based programs.

SunAmerica selected CAMRA 2000 investment software and CAMRA TBA/Dollar Roll, CAMRA 2000 Performance and Go trading modules.

Separately, the money management firm Carnegie Capital Advisors, Charlotte, N.C., will offer its small and midsize insurance company clients regulatory reporting and investment accounting services. Carnegie will use SS&C Direct, a computer service bureau, to provide the accounting and reporting services to its clients. A service bureau is an organization that provides data processing services for a fee.

SS&C Direct, a product of Windsor, Conn.-based SS&C Technologies, will use its CAMRA 2000 portfolio accounting, management and reporting software to provide the services to Carnegie clients.

    ActionSource signs Morgan Stanley

NEW YORK -- Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter and Co. Inc. has licensed the software ActionSource, which provides clients with information on corporate actions.

"ActionSource will enable us to provide Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter professionals around the world with the highest quality corporate action information," stated David Hirschfeld, a principal with Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter.

Corporate actions are activities that affect a financial instrument, such as a dividend declaration, tender offer or merger. ActionSource is provided by Enterprise Data Systems, Boston, and was developed by Fidelity Technology Solutions Co., Boston, its parent.

Bond Math 101 added to tutorials

NEW YORK -- Educational software maker Zoologic Inc. has added Bond Math 101 to its lineup of products for financial professionals.

It also offers Capital Markets 101 and Risk Management 101. Zoologic provides training and refresher software for some of the major investment banking houses.

According to Gregory Elmigen, a spokesman at Zoologic, many professionals are an expert in one area of the capital markets, such as equities, but don't know much about others. The Zoologic programs give professionals an easy way to learn or refresh their knowledge about the subjects.

Zoologic products like Bond Math 101 work on Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems.
