G. David Hurd, chairman emeritus of Principal Financial Group, received the 1997 Lillywhite Award for outstanding contributions to Americans' economic security. Mr. Hurd, who retired in 1994 from Principal Financial, also headed the APPWP; was a trustee of EBRI, which sponsors the award; was on the board of the American Council of Life Insurance; and was a member of the Labor Department's ERISA advisory council.
Bill W. Smith was appointed county treasurer and will oversee the $200 million Merced County Employees' Retirement System, Merced, Calif. He replaces Norman E. Fullerton, who died last March, and will serve until the term expires in December 1998. James Ball, county auditor, had been acting treasurer in the interim.
Mr. Smith was assistant county assessor for 17 years until last year when he left to start a Baskin-Robbins ice cream franchise
