Mutual fund assets are second in size to commercial banks and ahead of private pension funds, according to a report from the Investment Co. Institute.
The nation's 6,007 mutual funds had combined assets of $3.181 trillion at the end of June, with $1.533 trillion in stock funds and the rest about equally divided between bond and income and money market funds. At year-end 1995, mutual fund assets totaled $2.82 trillion, compared with commercial banks' $4.028 trillion and private pension funds' $2.625 trillion.
