The Senate today voted 74-24 to pass an amended version of a House tax package, H.R. 3448, that includes pension simplification measures easing the paperwork burden on employers and encouraging small businesses to set up pension plans. The bill, as passed, also would clarify the Supreme Court's decision that said insurance companies will not receive relief for criminal fraud relating to pension fund assets invested in their central investment pools. The bill also included a provision allowing pension plan coverage for self-employed clergy. A House-Senate conference committee now will have to iron out differences between the two versions.
