The median Canadian pension fund earned a 16.5% return for the year ended March 31, compared with 5.1% for the previous 12-month period and 14.2% for the year ended March 31, 1994, according to data of SEI Financial Services, Toronto.
For the year, 47% of active equity managers in Canada outperformed the TSE 300 Stock Index, while the median manager underperformed the index's 17.9% return by 0.2 percentage points. In comparison, for the year ended March 31, 1995, 53% of managers outperformed the index's 2% return.
The median active bond manager in Canada underperformed the ScotiaMcLeod Universe Bond Index by 20 basis points for the year, with 13.9%. And for the same period, 79% of the active foreign equity managers in Canada outperformed the MSCI World Index's 16.6%, with the median manager posting a 23% return, SEI Financial Services reported.
