The $139 million Newton (Mass.) Retirement System picked Putnam Investments to run $10 million in domestic growth stocks, said Violet M. Saganey, executive secretary. The money is part of $20 million taken from Phoenix Investment Counsel, which was terminated in fall. The fund will keep $10 million in a Russell 1000 index fund with Mellon Capital, its custodian. Mellon had been managing the entire allocation while the fund sought Phoenix's replacement.
