Executives at the Virginia Retirement System are hoping Gov. George Allen, a Republican, will sign into law a bill passed by state legislators last week that could make it easier for employees of cities and local subdivisions not part of the statewide public pension system to transfer their accrued retirement benefits when switching to state government jobs. The bill also would let VRS-covered state workers take their retirement benefits with them if they move to any of these local government organizations.
Mr. Allen has until April 12 to sign the bill. Currently, eight cities, including the state's capital, a town and three counties, do not belong to the VRS.
