Sen. Alan K. Simpson, R-Wyo., chairman of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Social Security and Family Policy, will conduct a hearing Monday on Social Security. Testimony will be sought on the future of the program and changes needed to fix it.
Sen. Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., co-sponsor of a series of bills with Mr. Simpson last year to fix Social Security, said there is growing support among lawmakers for legislation to shore up the system. ``To have the government running a transfer program made a lot of sense in 1935. It doesn't make a great deal of sense in 1996,'' he said.
