Michael P. Burns joined American Greetings Corp., Cleveland, as manager of retirement plans, replacing Caroline S. Smerillo, who left last October. Mr. Burns previously was a vice president of commercial lending at National City Bank in Cleveland.
Juan Almaguer has been promoted to investment officer at the $19 billion Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association. He had been an investment analyst. Fund officials are reviewing candidates for the analyst post.
Also, Robert Hermann has been elected chairman of the fund's investment board. He succeeds Marvin Kay, whose term as trustee expired.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Finland Rockwell A. Schnable resigned as president, chairman of the investment committee and trustee of the $7 billion Los Angeles Fire & Police Pension System. Mr. Schnable said his other commitments left him too little time. Trustee Nick Stonnington was named president and investment committee chairman. Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan has not yet named a replacement for Mr. Schnable to the board.
Carla Jane Eyre is leaving Harris Investment Management Inc., Chicago. At Harris, Ms. Eyre is chief investment officer, chief operating officer and second in command in the investment decision process. Ms. Eyre is leaving because Harris' parent, Bank of Montreal, is rethinking its plans for money management acquisition and expansion.
She becomes the second top executive to leave the money management team. Donald G.M. Coxe, president and chief investment officer, was named chairman earlier this month and no longer will be involved in investment decisions.
Harris has no immediate plans to replace Ms. Eyre, who plans to leave in June to pursue other opportunities.
Joe Scott Plummer was promoted to chief executive of Martin Currie Investment Management Inc., Edinburgh, effective April 1. Mr. Plummer, managing director and chair of Martin Currie's investment committee, will replace Michael Kennedy, who will remain executive chairman of parent company Martin Currie Ltd. until his retirement Sept. 30.
Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette Inc., New York, elected John S. Chalsty, chief executive officer, as chairman of the board, succeeding retiring co-founder Richard H. Jenrette. Joe L. Roby, the firm's chief operating officer, has become president. Mr. Jenrette will serve as senior adviser to the firm.
Stephen Leung was named chief investment officer and Tom Bonham Carter managing director of BZW Investment Management Hong Kong.
Previously, Mr. Leung was chief investment officer of INVESCO Asia Ltd. in Hong Kong. Mr. Bonham Carter previously was deputy managing director and chief investment officer of the Thai Asia Mutual Fund Co., a BZW Investment Management joint venture with major Thai financial institutions.
Graham Colbourne, managing director of BZW's Hong Kong operation, is returning to London as managing director of operations and information technology for BZW Asset Management.
Anna Tong now is chief investment officer and deputy managing director of INVESCO Asia. She previously headed investments with Aeltus Investment Management in Hong Kong, which was acquired by INVESCO last year.
