James M. Weiss joined State Street Research & Management Co., Boston, as senior vice president, a newly created position. He also will be head of the large-capitalization growth team and deputy head of the equity group.
Mr. Weiss was chief investment officer of large-cap equity at IDS Advisory Group, Minneapolis. Peter Anderson, chairman of IDS Advisory Group, will handle the CIO duties for the large-cap equity team.
A search is in progress for a senior portfolio manager for the team.
Timothy J. Lynch will become chairman and chief executive of William M. Mercer Inc., New York, responsible for the company's five geographic operating units and its technology resources. In addition, Vikesh Mahendroo will become president of Mercer and be responsible for its consulting practices and some of its worldwide business initiatives.
Both men served in the office of the chairman. With the new positions, that group is effectively disbanded. They will report to the third person who had shared that office, Peter Coster.
Gary M. Stentz joined Monsanto Co., St. Louis, as manager of pension asset operations, replacing Ed Goedeker, who retired. Mr. Stentz was previously director investments at TRW Investment Management Inc. and was succeeded by Brian Schneider.
Robert B. Russell II, chief operating officer and treasurer of Investment Counselors of Maryland Inc., Baltimore, died Nov. 22 in an automobile accident.
A son, Edward, also died in the accident. Mr. Russell was a partner of Investment Counselors since 1979. The firm's partners have not made a decision yet on his replacement.
Dennis Holder, chairman of the board of trustees of the $900 million Houston Firemen's Relief and Retirement Fund, died Nov. 23 of heart failure.
Mr. Holder, a veteran Houston fireman, was serving a three-year term as chairman. Donny R. Myers, vice chairman, will serve out the balance of the term, which ends in 1997.
Bruce Curwood, former treasurer of the University of Toronto, joined Frank Russell Canada in Toronto as a strategic consultant. He is replacing John Osborn, who is moving to Russell's Tacoma, Wash., office next year.
Stuart Budden, treasurer of McGill University, Montreal, is replacing Mr. Curwood at the University of Toronto. Mr. Budden has not yet been replaced at McGill.
Michael Kayes, formerly a senior vice president and senior securities analyst with NationsBank, Charlotte, N.C., joined Eastover Capital Management Inc., Charlotte, as chief investment officer.
Mr. Kayes said he replaces Robert Pharr, who left the firm. Further details were unavailable.
A spokeswoman for NationsBank said Mr. Kayes has not been replaced yet.
The Common Fund, Westport, Conn., appointed Susan C. Norton and Gregory B. Jansen to two newly created positions. Ms. Norton was named assistant vice president, client services. She was previously second vice president of corporate financial services at Northern Trust Co., Chicago. Mr. Jansen was named associate vice president of Endowment Advisers Inc., a companion organization to The Common Fund. Mr. Jansen's primary responsibility will be to focus on energy and private equity programs.
He was most recently director, energy group, corporate finance division at Midland Bank PLC., New York.
