From "lifeless financial indexes" to an ad for Ford Motor Co., David F. Hoffman's investment career has taken some unusual turns.
Mr. Hoffman, a portfolio manager and managing director for Brandywine Asset Management, Wilmington, Del., recently endorsed the Ford Explorer in an advertisement profiling "America's entrepreneurs."
Although Mr. Hoffman technically is no longer an entrepreneur, before joining Brandywine this summer he traded futures contracts for himself and others as head of his own firm, Hoffman Capital.
Before that, he had fixed-income management positions at Columbus Circle Investors, Stamford, Conn., and INA Capital Management, Philadelphia.
In the ad, Mr. Hoffman says he formed Hoffman Capital after becoming "bored pegging his performance against lifeless financial indexes." Mr. Hoffman then explains why he drives an Explorer.
Mr. Hoffman said he was brought into the advertising world through a convoluted network of acquaintances that include someone's brother-in-law and someone else's ex-girlfriend.
The process of creating the ad was fairly straightforward, he said. Ford's people met with his people (actually just him) to discuss why he drives an Explorer. After he re-wrote an initial draft of the ad copy that he found to be "only half acceptable," the final copy was completed.
Mr. Hoffman said no other endorsement deals are in the works.
