Jambu Palaniappan was named managing partner at OMERS Ventures, the venture capital arm of the $97 billion ($73 billion) Ontario Municipal Employees' Retirement System, Toronto, a spokesman said.
The position is new. Mr. Palaniappan, who is based in London, was hired due to his extensive operational experience within the startup world, the spokesman added.
Mr. Palaniappan previously headed up Uber Eats in Europe Middle East Africa region since its inception, and had worked for Uber since 2012 in various roles. Most recently, he spent 12 months as executive-in-residence at the London-based venture capital firm Atomico.
"We're so excited to welcome (Mr. Palaniappan) to our team — having overseen the Uber Eats business in Europe, Middle East and Africa and run the Uber business across a number of markets, he is perfectly placed to ensure OMERS Ventures offers the right support to the startups we back at every stage of their growth journeys," Damien Steel, managing partner and head of ventures at OMERS Ventures, said Tuesdayin a news release.
OMERS Ventures manages $1 billion, with €76 million ($84 million) invested in European technology.
