Jeffrey Mathews has joined Principal Asset Management as managing director and head of origination and structuring for private infrastructure, the firm announced in a Sept. 16 news release.
It is a new position, a spokesperson confirmed to Pensions & Investments. Mathews will lead transaction origination for infrastructure investments globally.
He will report to Mansi Patel, senior managing director, head of infrastructure debt who joined Principal earlier this year when it launched its new private infrastructure debt capability. The private infrastructure division focuses on investing in private infrastructure debt targeting themes including globalization, decarbonization and electrification.
"Clients continue to seek out higher risk premiums with lower default risk," Patel said in the news release. "We’re excited to add an experienced leader in Jeff to our team — working to help clients fill in financing gaps, especially given his extensive experience in infrastructure."
Mathews joins from Barclays, where he was a managing director of investment banking in the Energy, Power and Climate Technology group where he oversaw origination and execution of infrastructure transactions.
A spokesperson for Barclays could not be immediately reached.
Principal Asset Management is the global investment business of Principal Financial Group and had $699 billion in assets under management as of June 30, including $83.6 billion in private market assets under management.
