Daigo Hirai joined BlackRock in Tokyo as a managing director and head of Japan real estate.
Mr. Hirai replaces Chris Handt, a BlackRock spokeswoman said. She said Mr. Handt left the company but provided no further details.
Mr. Hirai reports to Hamish MacDonald, head of investments for APAC real estate, and Hiroyuki Arita, head of Japan.
BlackRock's alternatives platform globally had $320 billion in assets under management as of June 30, the release said.
Mr. Hirai was most recently a managing director in Blackstone Group's Tokyo office, where he worked for 12 years.
A Blackstone spokeswoman declined to comment regarding whether Mr. Hirai's role at the firm's Tokyo office will be filled.
