Chief Investment Officer
CalPERS, the largest public pension plan in the United States, seeks an experienced investment professional for the role of Chief Investment Officer (CIO). This individual leads and manages the 400+ person Investment Office, which manages and invests CalPERS portfolio of over $280 billion. The assets in the diversified global portfolio include public and private equity, fixed income, real estate, and inflation-linked assets. The CIO makes recommendations to and works closely with the CalPERS Board of Administration to determine prudent, forward-thinking investment strategies in accordance with CalPERS fiduciary responsibilities, policies and corporate governance standards. The CIO is a critical member of the CalPERS Executive Team and must have the skills to collaborate and work effectively with the CEO and other senior leaders on a range of issues including asset liability management and financial issues. The CIO is a visible investment leader – within the investment community, public pension industry, before regulatory and governmental bodies, and in the media.
The ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of successful and relevant professional experience. The individual must be a strategic and global investment thinker; knowledge of a broad spectrum of asset classes, both fundamental and alternative, is required. Candidates must demonstrate a deep understanding of asset allocation and a commitment to prudent risk management. Proven ability to manage, motivate and lead a strong, large and diverse investment group is essential, including experience working with a multi-faceted Board. The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and sound global governance principles, and have the ability to work effectively in a multi-functional, open, transparent public setting. Strong educational credentials are required. The position is based in Sacramento, CA.
