DC contributions inch higher in 2016

Plan sponsors and participants contributed $61 billion to defined contribution plans in 2016, according to data collected by Pensions & Investments' Research Center. Employees contributed about $42 billion to their plans, while employers matched, or otherwise, contributed about another $19 billion.

Last year's contributions were up about 3.4% from 2015, and while positive, growth was lower than 2015 and 2014 increases of 4.8% and 5.5%, respectively.

The distribution between employer and employee contributions was little changed over the observed periods -- an average 69.3% coming from employees and 30.7% from employers, with little deviation.
