Boeing lands $500 million contribution for pension funds

Boeing Co., Chicago, plans to contribute about $500 million total to its pension plans in 2017, spokesman Chaz Bickers said.

Boeing contributed $113 million to its pension plans in 2016, according to its 10-K filed Wednesday.

Boeing had $56.7 billion in pension assets and $76.7 billion in pension obligations, for an aggregate funded status of 73.9% as of Dec. 31, according to the 10-K. A year earlier, the pension funds were 76% funded with assets of $56.5 billion and liabilities of $74.4 billion.

The pension funds' discount rate was lowered to 4% in 2016 from 4.2% in 2015. Their long-term expected return was also lowered to 6.8% in 2016 from 7% in 2015.

As of Dec. 31, the pension funds had an aggregate asset allocation of 48% fixed income, 28% global equity, 10% hedge funds, 9% real estate and real assets, and 5% private equity; the allocation was unchanged from 2015.
