S&P 500 companies spent $475.6 billion on share repurchases in 2013, up 19.2% from the previous year and up 17.4% from 2011. According to S&P Dow Jones Indices, 2013 buybacks were still short of the 2007 high of $589.1 billion.

Apple Inc. led all index constituents with $25.9 billion in buybacks, followed by Exxon Mobil Corp. ($15.9 billion), IBM Corp. ($13.8 billion), AT&T Inc. ($13 billion) and Pfizer Inc. ($13 billion).
