BlackRock shoots, scores 8% stake in Manchester United soccer club

BlackRock (BLK) has bought an 8.21% stake, or 3.26 million shares of Class A stock, in soccer club Manchester United, according to an SEC filing Wednesday.

The club's shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MANU.

Manchester United PLC went public Aug. 12, raising $110 million, according the Manchester United's website.

The club is controlled by the Glazer family, which also owns the National Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“The ownership shown in the filing represents client holdings across all BlackRock funds/entities and investment strategies, passive and active, including iShares,” according to a statement from Farrell Denby, BlackRock spokesman.

The club currently leads the Barclays Premier League by seven points over cross-town rival Manchester City.
