United Continental to give $240 million to pension funds

United Continental Holdings Inc., Chicago, will contribute $240 million to its U.S. defined benefit pension plans in 2013, including a $41 million contribution in January, according to an 8-K filed with the SEC on Thursday.

The company expected to contribute about $195 million to its pension plans in 2012, but the actual number could not be determined by press time.

United Continental oversees three pension plans — two for Continental and one for former United employees. The plans had an aggregate $1.9 billion in assets and $1.8 billion in unfunded liabilities as of Dec. 31, 2011, according its most recent 10-K filing.

Spokesmen from the company did not respond to requests for additional information by press time.
