Holiday season has not been kind to consumer discretionary stocks

Since the beginning of Thanksgiving week - the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season - consumer discretionary stocks have trailed the overall U.S. equity market. From Nov. 19 through Dec. 26, the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF returned 2.13%, trailing the Russell 3000 index by 93 basis points.
