Atlantic crossing

Duo rows to aid breast cancer fight

Striving: Nick Rees, front, and Ed Curtis are preparing for a 2,600 nautical-mile journey.

Hedge fund marketer Nick Rees and his good friend, Ed Curtis, will row across the Atlantic starting in December 2013 to raise 250,000 ($386,633) for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a London charity that supports research and treatment breakthroughs.

Team Breakthrough Atlantic will participate in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge race from La Gomera, Canary Islands, to English Harbor, Antigua. The daring duo will make the 2,600 nautical-mile journey without external support over about three months.

Mr. Rees is a partner and heads marketing at hedge fund manager Absolute Return Partners LLP, Richmond, Surrey, England.

Mr. Rees picked an invaluable partner for the oceanic race. Mr. Curtis is a lifelong sailor and a senior instructor at the Plas Menai National Watersports Centre, Caernarfon, Gwynedd, Wales.

Motivation for the fundraising effort comes from the experience of Mr. Rees' wife, Ellen, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 33 and underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

“The time it will take us to row across the Atlantic will mirror the length of Ellen's physical recuperation post-surgery,” said the pair on their race website, http://breakthroughatlantic.com, where donations are being accepted.
