North Carolina Retirement Systems CIO resigns

Shawn Wischmeier, chief investment officer for the $71.8 billion North Carolina Retirement Systems, Raleigh, will resign on March 2.

Mr. Wischmeier will become CIO for the $6 billion Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies, Eden Prairie, Minn., according to a news release Friday from State Treasurer Janet Cowell.

Bryan Lewis will serve as interim CIO while the state conducts a national search for Mr. Wischmeier's replacement. Mr. Lewis is chief administrative officer for the state treasury's investment management division.

Mr. Wischmeier joined the North Carolina retirement system in June 2010. Before that, he was CIO of the$24.7 billion Indiana Public Employees' Retirement Fund, Indianapolis.

In the news release, Ms. Cowell praised Mr. Wischmeier for leading several initiatives, including gaining legislative authority for further portfolio diversification, a new risk management strategy and a restructured investment division.

Efforts to reach Mr. Wischmeier were unsuccessful.
