Chief Financial and Administration Officer
Amherst College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges, seeks an accomplished financial manager, with expertise in both strategy and financial operations, to serve as its chief financial and administration officer (CFO/CAO). The CFO/CAO will oversee all financial operations and, in concert with the president and senior colleagues, optimize financial and business systems and structures in support of the College’s mission and strategic goals.
In June of 2011 Carolyn “Biddy” Martin became Amherst’s 19th president. Her first year has been productive and prosperous for the College, and the Amherst community has responded with energy and optimism. As she begins her second year, President Martin has embarked on a quest to build her senior management team to include both Amherst’s first provost, and now, a new chief financial and administration officer. Amherst College seeks a CFO/CAO who will achieve consistent excellence in the execution of Amherst’s financial affairs, steward its assets, manage risk carefully, and provide wise, nimble financial counsel. The ideal candidate will bring significant experience in budgeting and planning, financial forecasting and analysis, accounting, and business operations, and have a minimum of ten years experience leading a financial department, preferably in higher education. S/he will also bring significant senior administrative leadership experience as the CFO/CAO oversees approximately two-hundred staff members.
Amherst, founded in 1821, has a long tradition of academic excellence and today is one of the most diverse and selective liberal arts colleges in the nation. It has a distinguished faculty of 200 teacher-scholars educating a student population of 1,795 men and women. With a lean administrative structure, an endowment of $1.62 billion and an operating budget of $148.6 million, the college is on sound financial footing and well prepared to realize its considerable aspirations. In October of 2011, the board of trustees approved the largest capital project in the history of the College – a new 220,000 square foot science center to be located at the heart of the campus. The CFO/CAO position is an exceptional opportunity for an individual with proven collaborative leadership abilities and strong technical skills to participate in shaping the future of one the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges.
