The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), the largest public pension plan in the US, seeks an experienced investment professional for the role of Chief Operating Investment Officer (COIO). Working very closely with the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), this individual functions in the lead role over the administrative and operational management of the Investment Office and is member of the executive staff of both the Investment Office and the whole CalPERS organization. Responsibilities are very broad and include extensive interaction with CalPERS Investment Committee on a broad array of issues, including coordinating the Investment Committee and Policy Sub-committee agendas; ensuring that all Investment Office operational infrastructure is run most efficiently and accurately; overseeing performance monitoring, trade settlement, custodial relationships and activities of the Board's independent investment consultants; acting for the CIO in his absence; overseeing the Supplemental Income Plans and serving as a liaison with the rest of the CalPERS enterprise and external stakeholders.

Candidates should have at least 10 years' successful and relevant experience in the private or public sector or a combination of both. Qualifications and experience include: excellent communication skills, substantial accomplishment within a large, complex, transparent setting with multiple constituencies, preferably within an investment setting; understanding of the operational aspects of an investment office; experience with boards; strong work ethic; high energy; excellent organizational skills; proven leadership ability. Active belief in diversity and sound corporate governance principles are essential. Strong educational credentials are required.
